Course description

Working with children, young people and families who have experienced domestic and/or sexual abuse looks at the effects of abuse and how abuse can affect the relationship between the non-abusive parent and the child. It also looks at the effect of trauma on the brain and on relationships. Finally, we will share practical activities and resources for supporting families and up to date information on risk assessment and safety planning.

 

Learning Objectives
  • Increase knowledge of domestic and sexual abuse and the affect on children, young people and families.
  • Increase confidence of working with children, young people and families who have experienced domestic and/or sexual abuse.
  • Learn about how early exposure to domestic abuse affects brain development and function.
  • Understand domestic and sexual abuse as a form of trauma.
  • Increase knowledge about the effects of abuse on parents, children and the parent-child relationship.
  • Build skills, knowledge and strategies to use with families.
