This course looks at the definition, prevalence and nature of domestic abuse, indicators of abuse, how to ask about and respond effectively to disclosures and the reasons why it is difficult to leave an abusive relationship. It will also provide you with information on relevant support services.
Learning objectives
- Develop a better understanding of gender based violence, specifically domestic abuse
- Be able to describe different types of abusive behaviours that perpetrators use
- Gain an understanding of the prevalence and nature of domestic abuse
- Understand intersectionality in relation to domestic abuse
- Be able to describe indicators of abuse
- Have increased knowledge of the impact of domestic abuse
- Have an understanding of how to ask about and respond to disclosures of domestic abuse
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the reasons why it is difficult to leave an abusive relationship
- Have a better knowledge of relevant support services.
Eligibility/Who should attend?
The course is relevant for any practitioner whose work brings them into contact with survivors of domestic abuse, and who want to develop a deeper understanding of the issue to better support survivors.
Format
This course is delivered online and involves independent learning and an interactive training session. A week before the session, you will receive an activity pack to work through in your own time and should take no longer than an hour to complete. The training session is tutor led and will last for three hours. In our virtual classroom, you will explore some of the topics from the activity pack in more depth and cover new topics. The training session will involve tutor presentation, question and answer opportunities and group work activities.
