Course Description
Domestic violence/abuse is inextricably linked to housing. This training is designed to equip housing professionals with an awareness of domestic abuse and their responsibilities in the wake of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. This course looks at the definition, prevalence and nature of domestic abuse, as well as and how to ask about it and respond to disclosures in a safe and sensitive way. Relevant changes introduced through the Domestic Abuse Act will be covered.
By the end of this course, you will:
– have a better understanding of domestic violence/abuse, including the new statutory definition of domestic abuse in the Domestic Abuse Act 2021
– gain an understanding of the prevalence and nature of DV/A
– be able to compare myths and realities about DV/A
– be able to describe indicators of abuse and different types of abusive behaviours that perpetrators use, including coercion and control
– know how DV/A is related to trauma and how experiences of trauma impact people
– have a better understanding of the reasons why it is difficult to leave a relationship with someone who is abusive
– be aware of new changes to housing rights for survivors introduced through the Domestic Abuse Act 2021
– have an understanding of how to ask about and respond to disclosures of DV/A
– have a better understanding of risk in relation to DV/A
– have a better knowledge of relevant support services and MARACs.
Who should attend?
The course is relevant for any housing professional whose work brings them into
contact with survivors of domestic abuse, and who wants to develop a deeper
understanding of the issue to better support survivors. This includes those who wish
to refresh their knowledge and skills following the implementation of the Domestic
Abuse Act 2021.
