Course Description

The need for services to be trauma-informed is increasingly well understood. But what does it actually mean in practice? This online blended training on becoming trauma-informed is for managers who are responsible for the design and delivery of health and social care services. On this course you will gain an understanding of how to recognise and sensitively respond to the effects of trauma. You will use a range of management tools to review current practice. Finally, you will create a plan on becoming trauma informed and introducing a trauma-informed ethos to your service(s).

By the end of the course, learners will:

– Be able to describe what a trauma informed environment is and why adopting a trauma informed approach is appropriate in health and social care services.
– Have a good understanding of how trauma affects people and how this affects staff.
– Have increased knowledge about how to practically implement a trauma informed approach in their service(s).
– Know what secondary or vicarious trauma is and be able to identify signs of secondary trauma in colleagues.
– Have an understanding of common self-care strategies for working with trauma.
– Have practical, adaptable tools that will enable their organisation to improve policy and practice.
– Have started to develop an action plan for their organisation to become trauma informed.

Format:

This course is delivered online and involves independent learning and an interactive training session. A week before the session, you will receive an activity pack to work through in your own time and should take no longer than an hour to complete. The training session is tutor led and will last for three hours with a 20 minute break. In our virtual classroom, you will explore some of the topics from the activity pack in more depth and cover new topics. The training session will involve tutor presentation, question and answer opportunities and group work activities.
