This course provides an introduction to good practice in recognising and sensitively responding to people who have experienced trauma. In an addition to developing an understanding of how trauma impacts on people and how engaging with services might be (re)traumatising for survivors, you will explore what a trauma informed approach looks including how to work remotely in a trauma informed way during COVID-19. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your practice and will take away some practical tools to help you respond in a more trauma informed way when you work with service users.
This course is specifically for people working in health and social care in recognition of the levels of trauma they faced during COVID-19.
By the end of the course, learners will:
Have an understanding about what a trauma informed environment is and why adopting a trauma informed approach is beneficial for clients.
Be able to describe what trauma is.
Be able to explain how people respond to traumatic experiences.
Have increased knowledge about how they and their service can become more trauma informed.
Have greater understanding of the impact of working with people affected by trauma and to explore strategies for self-care.
Have practical, adaptable tools that will enable them to work in a trauma informed way.
Format:
This course is delivered online and involves independent learning and an interactive training session. A week before the session, you will receive an activity pack to work through in your own time and should take no longer than an hour to complete. The training session is tutor led and will last for three hours with a 20 minute break. In our virtual classroom, you will explore some of the topics from the activity pack in more depth and cover new topics. The training session will involve tutor presentation, question and answer opportunities and group work activities.
