This training will run between 9:30 and 16:30 on the 22, 25 & 29 July.
The Community Group programmes are for children, young people and their mothers who have experienced domestic violence. They provide a community based setting to share and talk about their experiences. The Community Group model was originally developed in Canada. AVA has the endorsement of the Canadian authors to adapt and roll out the model in the UK.
The model is based around a programme of sessions for children aged 4 -21 (the children are divided into age-specific groups) which run for two hours a week over a twelve-week period. The programme offers concurrent group sessions for the children’s mothers. They are supported to understand how the violence has impacted on their child and how best to help them through the healing process.
The course is 3 days and provides an overview of the group programme and a detailed look at each of the 12 week sessions for the children’s and the mothers groups. There will also be information and guidance provided on risk assessments as facilitators are expected to conduct home assessment visits for each family who are referred to groups.

- understanding abuse
- reducing self-blame
- safety planning
- managing appropriate and inappropriate expressions of emotion
- the mother-child relationship.
Who should attend?
This training is only suitable for individuals who are currently in a place of work where the Community Groups Programme is being run. If the programme is not being run, a minimum of 8-10 staff from one workplace need to attend the training. To be eligible to run groups we would expect that participants to have a good understanding of the impacts of domestic violence on women and children and have experience of running groups and an understanding of the group work process.
