Course description

Looks at basic domestic violence theory and specifically how children under ten years old are affected. Focus will be given to behavioural, emotional and cognitive effects on children under ten years old, as well as the links between domestic violence and child abuse and the impact on parenting for both the abusive and the non-abusive parent. There will also be a focus on the effects of abuse on unborn children and their brain development and the impact of post traumatic stress on children. Practical guidance for practitioners will be given on working with schools, how to create a safety plan with children and good practice examples will be considered. The course will comprise of interactive activities, group discussions and the use of films to illustrate key topics.

  • To improve in confidence challenging myths and stereotypes
  • To make links between domestic violence and child abuse

Who should attend?

Anyone who works directly with children under ten years old for whom domestic violence is an issue. This course is aimed at practitioners with no previous training on domestic violence. For example, this may include Sure Start staff, Victim Support staff, teachers, students with placements in early years settings, health visitors and social workers.
